The most popular remedy for bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the use of antibiotics. However, antibiotics cost more and can develop yeast infection among women. As a result, more women prefer using home remedies for their vaginal infection. Contrary to what most people believe, BV is not caused by yeast infection, but bacterial imbalance within the vagina. To be sure that the symptoms are caused by bacterial vaginosis, a doctor must be consulted.
Causes of BV
Even health experts do not know exactly what causes this vaginal infection. However, there are some theories developed.
• Stress
Stress is known to cause chemical imbalance in the body. In events of chemical imbalance, the immune system becomes weak. The body’s natural way of fighting off disease will not be able combat infections effectively.
• Improper Nutrition
A healthy diet is necessary for the body to have a strong immune system. A weak body is powerless against infection and other diseases.
• Proper Personal Hygiene
It is necessary especially for women to be conscious about their personal hygiene. Washing up with clean water and regularly changing into clean underwear is hygienic.
• Smoking and Alcohol
Smoking is certainly not good for anyone’s health. It has the same effect as having a poor diet. The immune system weakens due to the harmful end products of this bad habit. Alcohol is also found to aggravate vaginal infection and suggested not to be taken especially at the time of infection.
• Multiple Partners in Sex
Bacterial vaginosis is not actually a sexually transmitted disease. However, having multiple sex partners can bring about infection through a partner not observing proper personal hygiene.
• Vaginal Douche
Vaginal douching is supposed to be used for hygienic purposes. However, some commercially available douches can pose harmful side effects to the vaginal area.
Home Remedies
Hydrogen Peroxide is commonly prescribed by doctors to be used as vaginal douche by women who have infection. This solution is diluted in clean water and can be also used as feminine wash.
Another effective home remedy is the use of tea tree oil. It is not recommended to drink this oil since it can cause harmful side effects. Alternatively, there is a diluted suppository used for fighting bacteria in the vagina.
The last home remedy is very popular among people who undergo weight loss programs – yogurt. Medical experts promote eating yogurt daily. The lactobacillus acidophilus contained within this food is a good bacterium that fights off bad bacteria. Yogurt can also be applied directly to the vagina as topical cream.
