Home remedies for bacterial vaginosis (BV) are getting more popular nowadays. With the increasing number of cases involving harmful side effects in the use of prescription drugs, people cannot help, but find alternative ways of treating bacterial infections. However, the use of prescription drugs and alternative medicines are both effective ways of treating BV. Choosing which method is in a woman’s discretion. Knowing the advantages and disadvantages of both treatment methods may help a woman decide which is better.

Over-the-counter Medicines

Over-the-counter medicines are more convenient to use. They are easy to take or apply compared to alternative/herbal medicines. Moreover, they come in strong dosages that can quickly heal infections.

•    Antibiotics
Antibiotics are the most commonly used medicine in treating vaginal infections and even other body infections. It brings quicker relief. However, antibiotics are known to be very expensive. In addition, if used too often, intolerance may be possible and therefore will not be effective anymore.

•    Feminine Wash and Douche
Feminine wash and douche are popular in cleansing the vaginal area of a woman. Both are not that costly. However, there are certain products which cause the vaginal skin to dry. Dried out skin may cause itching and irritation and soon will be the cause of infection. Choosing a milder product is recommended.

Alternative Medicines

Alternative medicines are those found at home, at the backyard and now some drugstores also sell them. Alternative medicines are usually herbal plants, but not necessarily always. The effectiveness and cost of these alternative remedies make it preferred choice among most women. However, most women find it tedious to prepare.

•   Garlic
Garlic is the most common alternative remedy for bacterial infections such as BV. By mixing a tablespoon of its fresh juice in a few tablespoons of yogurt, a woman will have an alternative feminine wash or vaginal douche. However, garlic is known for its distinct odor and may not be a good choice for some women.

•    Apple Cider Vinegar
This vinegar is very popular in weight reduction programs. A cup of apple cider vinegar is mixed in a hot tub to produce an antibacterial bath. Soaking in the bath for 20 minutes with legs spread apart will help soothe the irritation as well as heal bacterial infection in the vagina. However, the soothing effect of this vinegar is not as lasting as that of garlic.

•    Goldenseal
Goldenseal like garlic is also high in antibacterial properties. It can be taken as tea. However, the bitter taste of this herb makes it less popular with women. In this case, a capsule form may be taken.
